Re: Varnish finished Dreadnought

George, The varnish Collings are something special. I had a D1aVvarnish that I parted with to get my old D18. They're warm and open-sounding. They're everything a great Collings sounds like and then some. If it's the one i think you're looking at....that's a great deal. If I were right-handed, that ...

Re: D'Addario Folk Silk & Steel or Custom Lights on a 0002H?

Steve, The 000 is a great guitar, & a fantastic sounding one. The long scale does add some work to the playing. Before changing the string gauge, i'd suggest trying a couple of different types of strings from other manufacturers. My stock strings these days are from Curt Mangan in Colorado. I pl...

Re: String preferences and suggestions.

I've always had a soft spot for Pyramid & Newtone strings.....but the 80/20s are becoming hard to get in North America. I'm with George, I've now used at least a dozen sets of Curt Mangan strings. My personal favourites are the round core 80/20 All the strings are well made, smooth. I've used th...

Re: Collings Baby, 01, or 02H as a Travel Guitar?

I guess my answer will be similar to Charlie's as I now use a Waterloo14L as a travel guitar. For a long time I also used a 01a, with a vintage now neck, and it was a terrific instrument. I did a lot of air travel with that guitar, but ultimately I felt I was taking a risk handing off a $5k guitar t...

Re: Mandolin roll call -- who's got 'em and whatcha got?

Jimmy, The mandolin is a great rabbit hole to explore. Check out this torrified varnish MT2 that just arrived at Music Emporium. I am a big fan of varnish mandolins, as to me they sound way more open and airy compared to the lacquer models. I'd bet that with the torrified top & varnish.....this ...

Re: Mandolin roll call -- who's got 'em and whatcha got?

I used to have an early MT serial # 501. It was a great mando. Went on to play a Heiden F....and currently play an Ellis A deluxe with a beautiful double-flowerpot inlay that Tom did for me.
