I have the identical Collings CJ35G, and it's been my favorite. Slopes I've owned in the past: 1946 Gibson Southern Jumbo, 1951 Gibson Southern Jumbo, 1998 Bourgeois Martin Simpson, and a 1994 Gibson Roy Smeck Reissue.

I'm very partial to Collings, so the CJ35 has been my favorite that I've ownes. Best I've played? A pre war AJ. Would like to try a Fairbanks or Kopp.

I'd like to try a Fairbanks also. But with the purchase of the P*W last November, I'm pretty solid on the 14fret slopes. I'm out of room for anything else.

I noticed Gryphon's and Norman's Rare guitars have vintage CJs. Very tempting

'58 Epiphone Texan... great guitar, wide open sound, big vee neck. The long scale seems to make a little difference too.

How do they compare? Specifically, how does your Collings compare tonally with the vintage Gibson?

I am down to just the Collings CJ35G and the Gibson now.

The Collings has Martin Retros MM12 strings on it now. A great string for this guitar. Very woody sound compared to the Gibson which has a more musical tone to it, but very mature sounding wood. Both are fantastic to my ears and complement each other well.

I do have a Fairbanks F35 being built right now (3 straight braces). This will be the last acoustic I'll buy. I've had many nice ones over the years and time is telling me to settle into a handful and play life out with them. Kinda wish I kept the John Walker Wise River, but you can't keep them all! :)

I have only played one Walker Wise River and remember it being quite crisp. It was a beautiful guitar. I liked the few Kopp K35s I have played and was thinking I'd buy one of those when I ran into my baked Sitka CJ35. It is has a crunchy, dirty mid range and a lot of wood and warmth in the tone. I still haven't been fortunate enough to play a Fairbanks. I hope to one day. I suspect my last guitar purchase will be a Smeck copy of some sort. The only slope I miss is my 2011 Gibson Fuller's J35.
