I've always used and preferred 'Diamond Dust' type fingernail files. In fact, I still have one that I kiped from my Mom 40 years ago. It still had dust on it. Those old files were made by fusing the bort (diamond) onto the metal file. They lasted too long and new ones have some other material glued to the metal. They last for about two good uses and then they are down to bare metal.
I finally bought these 'jewelers files' on Amazon and can report that they do work better. They're made for metal and other hard materials and probably suck for that - but on soft fingernails they seem to work pretty well.
The three finer grades are great for fingernails with the added bonus that the coarse ones work great on toes...
