Has anyone split strings?
Has anyone split strings?
I have a CJ, german over rosewood that has a terrific bottom end and mid range, but it seems like top could use a little more power. I dont even know where to begin with this string bifurcation thing, or, if I should even bother to try it. Doubling the cost of my strings doesnt really excite me, but I am curious.
Would you go with a heavier gauge on top for more resonance, or a lighter gauge for more treble. Replace B & E only? Would I just be chasing my tail or do different strings and gauges actually make a difference? I imagine people will say it's up to my ear whether it works, but I thought I would check to see what the Collings Forum might contribute.

Have you tried Pearse New Mediums? Also, Just Strings sells single strings for Pearse and D'addario. So you could experiment that way. What strings are you currently using?

Re: Has anyone split strings?
Hi RNF, that's exactly what I do on my 12 fret dreads. I use D'addario ej17s and substitute the b and top e for light gauge - 12 & 16s.
This is because I find the trebles a tad too harsh with 13 &17s and I like a slightly higher than normal action, so hence the lights.
I realise that I could use bluegrass strings but - a lighter g string doesn't appeal. So if you'd like a few dozen sets of mediums unwounds let me know!

Re: Has anyone split strings?
That is funny because I do the exact opposite on my OM1A and D1AT. I use a 13 and a 17 on the E and B and then a light set for the rest. To me it sounds more balanced that way with fatter trebles (and less jangly) but to each his or her own! That is part of the fun in string experimentation....
Re: Has anyone split strings?
There are a number of "mixed" sets available on the market. I (and several others here) like the Pearse New Mediums but other manufacturers have similar non traditional sets labeled in a variety of ways.

I’ll just add that I am also a fan of the Pearse New Mediums. I use them on my D1AT and think they work great.

I often use John Pearse's Bluegrass PB, which are light top and medium bottom. (.012, .016, .024, .035, .045, .056) on my OM3HG. Perfect.
