Hi - wondering if we know yet what the longer-term durability might be for the Vintage Satin finish that Collings now offers for their Traditional models?

There is something about it that just "looks" fragile, but I have no idea, and thought I'd ask. I'm pretty easy on my guitars anyway, and the usual Collings gloss finish holds up very well for me.

I don’t know the answer, but I’ll pose another question: is it the same satin finished used on the MT and MF mandolins? Just a thinner coat on the Traditional models or maybe a different finish altogether?

Northernbreed I'm betting it will hold up just fine. The same concerns were raised when the varnish finish came out.....I have a 10yr old D1av varnish and it still sparkles. Over the years I've had an MT mandolin, a Waterloo 14L and an OM1aJL..... I think if you're a thrasher you can damage any guitar regardless of finish. If you don't use it, it will look pristine, like an ignored closet-queen, and if you just play it.....well over time, it will get some patina and normal player wear

I have a D1ATS since June of last year and I play it everyday. It does have a bit of a shine forming where my arm hangs over the top bout. It does not bother me and I do believe the satin finish makes a positive difference. Love the guitar and it does not appear be more susceptible to dings, scratches, etc. than gloss finish.
