This is my second Collings, a very nice D2H.



It has a particularly nice headstock overlay:

Sitka spruce top with Adi bracing, East Indian Rosewood back & sides, Mahogany neck. The headstock overlay is Ebony.

Well this beauty is boxed up and going back for a refund. It was advertised as having a 1 3/4" nut, but it has a 1 11/16" nut. I know that's not much difference, but 1 3/4" is my preference and I bought it based on the dealer saying that was what it had. That's an expensive guitar, and I want what I was expecting.

At least I am getting a full refund due to help from Collings. The dealer wanted to knock $400 off the refund because I registered it and properly installed a strap button on the heel. Collings went to bat for me and now the dealer is paying the freight back and giving me a FULL refund.

I’m sorry to hear this turn of events. But glad to hear that it all worked out. You did the right thing by not settling for the non-preferred nut width. What tipped you off? Did you notice the different feel?

It did not feel right to me. Then I wrote to Collings with the serial number and they sent me the build report... which said it was shipped with a 1 11/16" nut.

I questioned that after measuring it incorrectly (I tried to measure the nut itself, and because it is tapered like the headstock that can be difficult. Turns out the "nut width" spec is measured across the fingerboard where it meets the nut, not the nut itself).

Collings said they had only ever shipped two D2H to that store and they were both specced the same and both were 1 11/16".

They had me measure it at the 3rd, 5th, and 7th frets just to make sure it was not some anomaly, and those measurements confirmed that although the dealer's listing showed 1 3/4" it was in fact a 1 11/16" nut & neck. Collings even shared the measurements at 3rd, 5th, and 7th frets for both 1 11/16 and 1 3/4 necks so I could clearly see this is a 1 11/16 neck.

Collings support was super helpful in dealing with the dealer too, calling them on at least two occasions to help convince them to do the right thing. I was very impressed at the Collings dedication to customer service.

You definitely deserve to get what you were expecting. Collings customer support is incredible, even if you were buying a used guitar. Just one more reason to buy a Collings.

It is a gorgeous guitar, but I totally agree with you. When you spend that kind of money, you have to get exactly what you believed you were purchasing. KUDOS to Collings for stepping up and doing the right thing. The TOTAL antithesis of Gibson Guitars. Bought a Gibson CL-50 in 1999 that turned out to be a total lemon. Two trips back to the factory and it was still buzzing! They would NOT stand behind their product and give me a full refund. They lost a customer forever. I was able to get some help from Stan Jay (god bless his soul and RIP) who intervened and brokered a deal with Gibson. I still lost a few hundred on the transaction, but was able to use the money to buy my first Collings from Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island in 2000.

Sorry to hear about the neck size issue. I usually like to play a larger neck too but sometimes the smaller nur size works too. My issue is with the string spacing on the bridge. I need the larger spacing size.
